OG Maco has no idea how to move in a room full of vultures. And certainly, that’s part of the appeal: fans of the 2015 XXL Freshman cite his willingness to engage with societal issues and to sidestep industry red tape as part of what makes him endearing. But it’s also gotten him into trouble, including a short-lived beef with Future over the role of music in perpetuating drug addiction and other destructive behaviors, and with Migos when Maco claimed they had stolen the dabbin’ dance from Skippa da Flippa. But now, the Atlanta rapper is hoping the music will speak for itself. In a sit-down with Ebro at Hot 97, Maco says that his debut album, Children of the Rage, is done, and that while it features no hooks, it does boast input from no less than eight Grammy-winning musicians. The “U Guessed It” star admits that he’s unlikely to receive a nomination, but thinks the LP is deserving of its own statuette.“The OG Maco album been on our phones for at least a month and a half,” he said, citing corporate red tape as the reason it isn’t out yet. As for the interview itself, there are still rough edges. At one point, Ebro calls Maco “abrasive”; at another, the host and the rapper talk in circles about whether Maco has an issue with Father. But Maco–who says he will change his rap name after the album is out–is making a deliberate attempt to shift the focus onto his work on wax. He also compared himself to “Michael Jordan, Tom Brady and Kobe Bryant,” saying, “I’m a fucking winner.”
