On this day, July 21, in hip-hop history…
Today in Hip-Hop: House of Pain Drop Their Debut Album, ‘House of Pain’1992: On July 21, 1992, hip-hop trio House of Pain unleashed their own brand of mosh mayhem rap on the world with their self-titled debut album.Everlast, Danny Boy and DJ Lethal drew early comparisons to the Beastie Boys being that they were a trio of White guys in a predominantly and historically Black genre. But they proved their worth by pairing sick bars with undeniable beats. They even managed to incorporate their Irish heritage into the mix. Their debut album was propelled by the chart-topping single, “Jump Around,” which was produced by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill. “Jump Around” peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and it was dubbed one of VH1′s 100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s. To play up their rowdy, Irish-American image, House of Pain shot the music video for the single right in the middle of New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Tommy Boy Records release went on to become certified Gold by the RIAA in October of 1992 and paved the way for House of Pain’s illustrious run until they disbanded in 1996.
